I asked Dr Joseph Ketan on Facebook about the Institute of PNG Studies (IPNGS) and this is what he said.

Hi Duncan, good to hear from you. The IPNGS was once the hub of literary progress, cultural revival, and the leading producer of PNG documentary films and ethnmusicological research in the country. It still has the complete archives of all music recordings in PNG.

The once thriving publications division was closed down. The film division was transferred to Goroka National Film Institute (NFI). The National Literature Competition and all journals ceased. The remnant of IPNGS is now controlled by the National Cultural Commission (NCC).

The Cultural Studies Division was transferred to the National Research Institute (NRI) (along with me) in 1990. The dismantling of this great PNG research institution has seen us go backwards on all fronts (literary writing included).

I transferred to the Insitute of Pacific Studies (IPS) in Suva some years later. IPS is now part of University of South Pacific (USP). I got published at IPS in 2004. Great place on a hill overlooking Laucala Bay.
