The DCA, particularly the Ship-Rider Agreement, offers potential benefits for the fisheries industry. It is crucial to consider its broader implications and explore other avenues for economic growth and development.
Our maritime environment also holds immense potential to boost our economy. The National Fisheries Authority estimates the average market value of PNG’s catch at K350 to K400 million. However, the true value of artisanal fisheries remains difficult to ascertain. It is crucial that we seize the opportunity to increase the economic value and returns from these fisheries.
One of the key advantages of the DCA, specifically the Ship-Rider Agreement, lies in addressing the challenges that have hindered our ability to benefit from our marine resources. By enhancing maritime security and curbing unreported and unregulated illegal fishing activities, we can safeguard our resources and ensure that PNG reaps the revenue it deserves. This aspect of the agreement holds tremendous potential for boosting our economy.
PM Marape must however avoid centering the DCA around the fisheries industry. While the economic value and returns from marine resources are significant, we must acknowledge that they alone will not save our economy. It is crucial to explore other sectors and opportunities that the DCA can unlock for us.
The DCA presents a unique chance to boost various aspects of our economy, such as tourism, infrastructure development, and trade. Strengthening our defense capabilities and forging partnerships with international allies can create a more secure environment that attracts tourists and investors alike.
I think it is important to note that the benefits of the DCA can be extend beyond the fisheries industry and the signed Ship-Rider Agreement. Marape must communicate a comprehensive vision that encompasses the broader economic potential the agreement offers instead of just the fisheries industry.
Our ultimate goal in this agreement must be to utilize the DCA to its fullest potential and safeguarding our sovereignty.
This is a great heads up. The DCAs Implications
for Fisheries sector should not be touted as saving the economy because none of the unrealized benefits of the onshore mining and gas resource revenue resulted from the lack of a DCA. Rather, they are the outcome of a lack of consultation, and proper negotiations with developers in each instance. Maritime Surveillance these days does not necessarily have to break the bank to the extent that DCAs have to be signed-with this in mind and Because this agreement is being considered we must come up with options for effective security and Surveillance options that do not cost us an arm and a leg in terms of sovereignty or otherwise.
